What can I expect on my first visit to Desert
Spring?
Our worship style is a blend of the traditional and contemporary styles,
including both upbeat music and traditional hymns. We sing praises to
the Lord, lift each other up in prayer, reflect on God's word as revealed in
the Bible, and hear an informative message from the Pastor.
A prayer minister is available at the front of the sanctuary after the close
of each service for confidential individual prayer. Please join us for
coffee, treats and good conversation on the patio between services.
We share communion on the first Sunday of the month at each worship time. In
the United Methodist tradition, all are welcome at the Lord's table to
partake in the body (as represented by bread) and blood (as represented by
grape juice) of Jesus Christ.
Most people are dressed in the "smart casual" style, with slacks and
collared shirts for men, and skirts or slacks for women.
Sacraments: As in other mainline Protestant churches, United
Methodists celebrate two Sacraments: Baptism and Holy Communion. Baptism is
the initiatory rite of the Church whereby persons are recognized and
welcomed as belonging to God through the forgiveness of sin. In our
tradition, children, youth and adults are baptized. When children are
baptized, parents or guardians, along with the congregation pledge to
nutrure the child in the faith. To schedule a Baptism, speak with one of the
pastors or call the church office (256-5933). The other Sacrament of the
Church is Holy Communion, also known as the Lord's Supper, or the Eucharist.
As with Baptism, Communion is a means of receiving God's love and grace into
our lives. In the United Methodist Church, Communion is open to all persons
and you need not be a member of this church to receive the Sacrament.
Prayer Ministry: At the close of each worship srvice, a prayer
minister is available at the front of the church to pray with you. In the
time of the Pastoral Prayer, it is not possible to name each person for whom
we want to be in prayer and you may have a prayer concern that you prefer
not to voice to everyone. If you desire to pray with one of our ministers,
you are invited forward after the closing hymn and benediction.
Music: The music of the Church is an expression of our faith and
belief. Whether a traditional hymn of the Church or a contemporary song, the
music lifts and enlivens our spirits. Our worship is further enriched by the
choirs, soloists, handbells, instrumentalists, and other special music. Each
is an act of worship and service to God.
Childcare: Your children are invited to worship with you. You may
choose though to have them in childcare provided for infants and toddlers up
to age three. At 9:00 and 10:30, older children can participate in our
Sunday School program. For your convenience, there is also a Comfort Room
with a view of the worship space accessible from the entryway.
What amenities are available for the physically
challenged at Desert Spring?
The closest parking spaces to the sanctuary are designated handicapped
spaces. The sanctuary, handicapped equipped rest rooms, class rooms and
patio are all accessible by ramps from the street level. We offer
large print bulletins for the visually impaired. Cassette copies of each
week's message from the Pastor are available for those who are hard of
hearing.
